ऋषि असित असित कश्यप वंशीय सूक्त द्रष्टा और गोत्रकार ऋषि थे। उनकी पत्नी हिमालय की कन्या एकपर्णा थी। ये युधिष्ठर के यज्ञ में ऋत्विज बने थे। ये अन्य ऋषियों के साथ कृष्ण और बलराम को मिलने कुरुक्षेत्र के अन्तर्गत स्यमंतक क्षेत्र में गए थे। असित ऋषि आदित्य तीर्थ में रहते थे। अभी ये गृहस्थी ही थे जब जैगीषव्य ऋषि उनके आश्रम में आए। उन्होंने कई वर्ष जैगीषव्य ऋषि का आतिथ्य किया। परन्तु ऋषि के द्वारा एक भी प्रशंसात्मक शब्द न कहने पर असित उनकी अवहेलना करने लगे। परन्तु वे जहां जाते, वहीं जैगीषव्य को पाते। उनकी योग शक्ति को देखकर असित ने उनसे क्षमा मांगी तथा ‘मुमुक्षु व्यक्ति ब्रह्मपद की प्राप्ति कैसे करे” इस विषय पर संवाद किया। जैगीषव्य ने उन्हें योग का उपदेश देकर सन्यास की दीक्षा दी। इससे उन्हें परमपद की प्राप्ति हुई। असित एक सिद्ध पुरूष थे । असित मुनि सदा धर्मपरायण, पवित्र, जितेन्द्रिय, किसी को भी दण्ड न देने वाले, महातपस्वी तथा मन, वाणी और क्रिया द्वारा सभी जीवों के प्रति समान भाव रखने वाले थे। उनमें क्रोध नहीं था। वे अपनी निन्दा और स्तुति को समान समझते थे। प्रिय और अप्रिय की प्राप्ति में उनकी चित्तवृत्ति एक सी रहती थी। वे सबके प्रति सम दृष्टि रखते थे। वह श्रीकृष्ण से मिले थे और श्रीकृष्ण के कुरुक्षेत्र वाले यज्ञ में यह पुरोहित थे। असित युधिष्ठिर के यज्ञ में भी निमंत्रित थे। असित एक गोत्रकार ऋषि थे, जिनका विवाह हिमवान की पुत्री एकपर्णा से हुआ था। ये ब्रह्मवादी तथा मंत्रद्रष्टा थे। असित, कश्यप के पुत्र और देवल के पिता थे और एकपर्णा के मानसपुत्र थे। असित ऋषि का आश्रम एक पहाड़ पर था। यहाँ श्राद्ध करने का अनंत फल कहा गया है। ऋषि असित ऋषि प्रचेता के पुत्र थे। असित निःसंतान था, इसलिए उसने अपनी पत्नी के साथ शिवजी के पास जाने का फैसला किया और उनसे पुत्र के रूप में वरदान देने का अनुरोध किया। उन्होंने व्यापक तपस्या की और भगवान शिव जी ने उन्हें बताया कि, वह अच्छी तरह से जानते हैं कि मुनि क्या चाहते हैं। तब उन्होंने भगवान शिव ने उन्हें “संसार विजय” मंत्र दिया और उन्हें इसका पाठ करते रहने के लिए कहा। इष्ट देवी एक समय पर आएंगी। उचित समय और उसकी इच्छा पूरी करें। असित मुनि इस मंत्र का जाप करते रहे सौ साल के लिए। देवी इष्ट प्रकट हुई और उन्हें वरदान दिया शिवांश के रूप में एक पुत्र का। एक बेटा पैदा हुआ और उसका नाम देवल रखा गया। वह एक महान विद्वान निपुण और एक सुंदर युवा था । असित मुनि ने उसका विवाह रत्नमालवती के साथ कर दिया। कुछ समय के लिए वह अपने परिवार के साथ रहा। लेकिन एक दिन उसने सो रही पत्नी को छोड़ दिया और तपस्या के लिए गंधमादन पर्वत निकल पडा ।यह पता चलने पर कि देवल निकल चुका है वह दुःख से व्याकुल थी और अंततः उसने प्राण त्याग दिये । मुनि देवल ने अपनी तपस्या जारी रखी। उसने अपने अवगुणों पर विजय प्राप्त कर ली थी। उन्होंने एक हजार साल के लिए तप किया।
English Translation. Rishi Asit Asit was from Kashyap lineage. He was a far sighted gotrakar sage. His wife was Ekparna, the daughter of Himalaya. Asit became Ritvij in Yudhishthira’s Yagya. He along with other sages went to the Syamantaka area under Kurukshetra, to meet Krishna and Balarama. Rishi Asit, lived in Aditya Tirtha. He was still a householder when Jaigishavya Rishi came to his ashram. He hosted the sage Jaigishavya for many years. But when the sage did not even, say a single word for his praise, Asit started disregarding him. But thereafter, wherever he went, he found Jaigishavya there. Seeing his yoga power, Asit apologized to him and asked him “How a seeker can attain Brahm”. Asit was a perfect man. Asit Rishi was always, having positive attitude, religious and pious. He had controlled his anger There was no anger in him. He used to consider his criticism as well as praise, equally. His attitude remained the same in the attainment. He had equal vision towards everyone. Once he met Lord Krishna and he became a priest in Shri Krishna’s Kurukshetra Yagya. Asita was also, once invited, for Yudhishthira’s Yagya. Asita was a gotrakar sage who was married to Ekparna, the daughter of Himalaya. He believed in Brahmanism. Asita was the son of Kashyapa and the father of Devala and the son of Ekaparna. Asit Rishi’s hermitage was on a mountain. Here people used to get the eternal fruit of performing shrad. Rishi Asit was the son of Rishi Pracheta. Asit was childless, So he along with his wife decided to visit Shivji and request him to grant them a boon, in the form of a son. He carried out extensive tapasya and Lord shiv jee appeared and told him that, he very well knew what the Muni had desired. Lord Shiv gave him the “Sansaar Vijay’ mantra and asked him to keep reciting it. The Isht devi would come at an appropriate time and fulfill his wish. Asit Muni kept reciting this mantra for hundred years. The Devi appeared and granted him the boon of a son as a Shivansh. A son was born and was named as Deval. He grew up and became a great scholar well versed with vedas. He was a handsome young man. Asit Muni got him married to Ratnamalavati. He lived with his family for some years. But one fine day he left his sleeping wife and left for “Gandhmaadan” mountain for tapasya. On discovering that Deval had left, she was distraught with sorrow and ultimately died. Her son performed the last rites. Muni Deval continued with his tapasya. He had won over his vices. He performed Tapasya for one thousand years.
