Maitraka dynasty ruled across Gujarat and Saurashtra (Kathiawar) from the fifth to the eighth centuries CE. General Bhatarka established it and capitalized on the collapse of the Gupta
dynasty to his advantage, ruling over Saurashtra and Gujarat with his capital at Valabhi (Vala).
Bhattarka, the Maitraka King, had also founded the Valabhi University in Gujarat
The ancient Indian city of Valabhi, thus became the centre of the Maitraka dynasty from the fifth to the eighth centuries CE. In Saurastra (later Gujarat), western India, it was situated northwest
of the port of Bhavnagar on an inlet of the Gulf of Khambhat (Cambay).
