कपिल ऋषि सनातन धर्म शास्त्रों में कपिल ऋषि को अग्नि का अवतार और ब्रह्मा का पुत्र माना गया है। कपिल को विष्णु का पांचवां अवतार भी माना जाता है। नारद पुराण में दो कपिल ऋषियों का उल्लेख है। एक ब्रह्मा का तथा दूसरा विष्णु का अवतार था। इनमें से वेदान्ती कौन, और सांख्य शास्त्रज्ञ कौन था, यह ज्ञात नहीं विष्णु पुराण में कपिल विष्णु के अवतार हैं। विश्व का मोह भंग करने के लिए उन्होंने अवतार लिया कर्दम प्रजापति और देवहुति से उत्पन्न कपिल सम्भवतः सांख्य दर्शन के प्रवर्तक थे। विष्णु पुराण के अनुसार कपिल ऋषि विष्णु के अंश हैं विश्व का मोह भंग करने के लिए उन्होंने धरती पर अवतार लिया। वे सांख्य दर्शन के प्रवर्तक थे। इस दर्शन में प्रकृति तथा चेतन पुरूष ही जगत् का मूल माना गया है। सांख्य, जिससे ठीक ज्ञानहोता है। मूल प्रकृति आदि पदार्थों की गिनती होती है। कपिल मुनि का कथन है. “प्रमाण के बिना ईश्वर का अस्तित्व मानना अनुचित
कपिल ऋषि के साथ एक कथा जुड़ी है। समस्त उत्तर भारत को जीतने के पश्चात् सगर ने अश्वमेघ यज्ञ किया। इन्द्र को खतरा पड़ गया कि सगर उसका पद न छीन ले। अतः उसने यज्ञ का घोड़ा चुरा कर कपिल ऋषि के आश्रम में बांध दिया। घोड़े को सगर के साठ हजार पुत्र (प्रजा) ढूंढने निकले। उन्होंने सारी पृथ्वी रौंद डाली। चारों दिशाओं का भेदन करने के पश्चात्, वे कपिल मुनि के आश्रम में गए। वहाँ घोड़े को चरते देख कर उन्होंने मुनि को चोर समझा और कुदाल, हल, वृक्षों के तने लेकर आश्रमवासियों पर हमला कर दिया। क्रोधि ात मुनि ने अपने शिष्यों को उनका सामना करने की आज्ञा दी। शिष्यों द्वारा वे सब मूर्च्छित कर दिए गए। बहुत दिनों तक प्रतीक्षा करने के पश्चात् सगर ने अपने पोते अंशुमान को अपने चाचाओं और अश्व का पता लगाने के लिए भेजा सगर ने उसे समझाया, अभिवादन योग्य लोगों को प्रणाम करना और जो तुम्हारे कार्य में विघ्न डालें. उन्हें समाप्त कर देना। अंशुमान तेजस्वी और पराक्रमी था। वह दादा के आदेश अनुसार अस्त्र-शस्त्रों से सज्जित होकर चल पड़ा। मार्ग में मिले दिग्गजों की पूजा कर, उसने नम्र भाव से घोड़े के विषय में पूछा। सभी ने उसे आशीर्वाद दिया। अन्त में वह उसी स्थान पर पहुंचा, जहाँ उसके सम्बंधी शापित पड़े, जल के बिना तड़प रहें थे। अंशुमान् उन्हें देखकर रोने लगा। वह जल के लिए इधर-उधर दौड़ा, परन्तु कहीं भी जलाशय दिखाई नहीं दिया। कपिल मुनि को अंशुमान ने नम्रता से शान्त किया। ऋषि ने गंगाजल से पितरों का तर्पण करने के लिए कहा और आशीर्वाद दिया कि तुम्हारा पौत्र गंगा लाएगा। English Translation Kapil Rishi In religious scriptures of Sanatan Dharma, Kapil Rishi has been considered as an incarnation of Agni and a son of Brahma. Kapil is also considered as the fifth incarnation of Vishnu. Narada Purana mentions two Kapil sages. One was the incarnation of Brahma and the other of Vishnu. It is not known, who among these was a Vedanti and who was a Sankhya scientist. Kapil is an incarnation of Vishnu in the Vishnu Purana. He incarnated to dispel the illusion of the world Kardam Prajapati and born of Devahuti Kapil was probably the originator of Samkhya philosophy. According to the Vishnu Purana, sage Kapil is a part of Vishnu who incarnated on earth to dispel the illusion of the world. He was the originator of Samkhya philosophy. In this philosophy, nature and conscious, are considered to be the origin of the world. Sankhya, which leads to accurate knowledge. Basic nature of materials is considered. This is the statement of Kapil Muni. It is unfair to believe in the existence of God without proof. There is a legend associated with Kapil Rishi. After conquering the whole of North India, Sagar performed the Ashwamedha Yagya. Indra was in danger that Sagar might not snatch his position. So he stole the horse of Yagya and tied it in the hermitage of sage Kapil. Sixty thousand sons (subjects) of Sagar set out to find the horse. They trampled the whole earth. After traversing the four directions, they went to Kapil Muni’s hermitage. Seeing a horse grazing there, they mistook Muni for a thief and attacked the ashram residents with spade, plow and tree trunks. Enraged with this, the sage ordered his disciples to face them. They were rendered unconscious by the disciples. After waiting for many days, Sagar sent his grandson Anshuman to find out his sons and their horses, Sagar explained to him, to greet people whoever are worthy of the greeting and those who disturb your work, put an end to them. Anshuman was a very mighty person. As per the orders of his grandfather, he went armed with weapons. Worshiping the giants he met on the way, he humbly asked about the horses. Everyone blessed him. At last he reached the same place, where his cursed relatives were lying, suffering without water. Anshuman started crying, after seeing them. He ran for water, here and there, but no reservoir was visible anywhere. Anshuman politely pacified Kapil Muni. The sage asked him to offer Gangajal to his relatives and blessed that his grandson will bring Ganga, to them.
