भृगु वंशीय गणों में से एक ‘वत्स’ गण है। अन्य विद, यस्क, वैन्य, शौनक, मित्रेयु आष्टिषेण वत्स ऋषि व्यास की शिष्य परम्परा में याज्ञवल्क्य का वाजसनेय शिष्य था। पूर्वी भारत में वत्सनाम का एक लोक समूह था, जिसने महाभारत युद्ध में पाण्डवों का पक्ष लिया था। काशी देश का एक राजा भी वत्स था। वायु पुराण अनुसार वह प्रतर्दन का राजा था। परशुराम के भय से इसे गौशाला में रखा गया था। इसलिए इसका नाम ‘वत्स’ पड़ा। वत्सदेश की उत्पत्ति का संबंध काशी के चंद्रवंशी राजाओं से जोड़ा जाता है ! वत्स राज्य, आधुनिक उत्तर प्रदेश के प्रयागराज तथा मिर्ज़ापुर ज़िले में था ! इस जनपद की राजधानी कौशांबी थी। ऋषि वत्स का मुख्य ग्राम द्युमात् था किंतु वह प्रतर्दन, ऋतुध्वज और कुवलयाश्व नामों से भी विख्यात था। ब्रह्मांड एवं वायु पुराणों में वत्स और प्रतर्दन को एक न कहकर वत्स को प्रतर्दन का पुत्र कहा गया है। वत्स गोत्र के वंशज : वत्स ब्राह्मणों का एक गोत्र है। शोनभद्र,(सोनभदरिया), बछ्गोतिया, बगौछिया, दोनवार, जलेवार, शमसेरिया, हथौरिया, गाणमिश्र, गगटिकैत और दनिसवार आदि वत्स गोत्र के वंशज हैं ! महर्षि च्यवन और महाराज शर्यातपुत्री सुकन्या के पुत्र राजकुमार दधीचि की दो पत्नियां थी ,जिसमे पहली का नाम सरस्वती और दूसरी का नाम अक्षमाला था। कौशल देश में एक राजा का नाम भी वत्स था। वह द्रोपदी स्वयंवर में उपस्थित हुआ था।
Rishi Vats:-
One of the Bhrigu clans is Vat’s clan. Yajnavalkya was a Vajasaneya disciple. Other disciples were Vids, Yaskas, Vainyas, Shaunakas, Mitreyu Ashtisena Vatsa. In eastern India, there was a folk group called Vatsanam, who took the side of the Pandavas in the Mahabharata war. A king of Kashi country was also Vats. According to the Vayu Purana, he was the king of Pratardana. Due to the fear of Parshuram, he took shelter in a cowshed. That’s why he was named ‘Vats’. The origin of Vatsadesh is related to the Chandravanshi kings of Kashi. Vats state was in Prayagraj and Mirzapur districts of modern Uttar Pradesh. The capital of this district was Kaushambi. The main village of Rishi Vatsa was Dyumat, but it was also famous by the names Pratardan, Ritudhwaj and Kuvalyashwa. In the Brahmanda and Vayu Puranas, instead of calling Vatsa and Pratardana as one, Vatsa has been called the son of Pratardana. Descendants of Vatsa gotra: Vatsa is a brahmin gotra. Shonbhadra, (Sonbhadaria), Bachgotia, Bagochia, Donwar, Jalewar, Shamseria, Hathoria, Ganmishra, Gagatikait and Daniswar etc. are descendants of Vats gotra. Prince Dadhichi, son of Maharishi Chyawan and Maharaj Sharyatputri Sukanya, had two wives. The name of the first wife, was Saraswati and the name of the second wife was Akshamala. The king of Kaushal country was also a Vats, who was present during Draupadi Swayamvar.
