ऋषि यास्क यह ऋषि यस्क का पुत्र था। यस्क भृगुकुल में उप्पन्न एक गोत्रकार ऋषि था। वेद के कठिन शब्दों की सूचियाँ अथवा निधन्दु जो प्रजापति कश्यप ने लिखा था। उस पर भाष्य यास्क ने लिखा इसे निरूक्त कहते हैं। वृहदारण्यक उप० में इसे भारद्वाज ऋषि का गुरु कहा है। यास्क का अन्य शिष्य जातुकर्ण्य कहा गया है। यह पाणिनि से पहले था। इसका काल लगभग 700 ई० पूर्व माना गया है। निरूक्त वेदमंत्रों का अर्थ जानने के लिए पहले उनकी ‘निरूक्ति’ जानना आवश्यक था। जो कठिन शब्द व्याकरण से नहीं सुलझते थे। उनके अर्थ ज्ञान के लिए निरूक्त की रचना की गई। इस ग्रन्थ में वैदिक शब्दों की व्याख्या के साथ व्याकरण, भाषा विज्ञान, साहित्य आदि विषयों की जानकारी भी प्राप्त है। यास्क वैदिक संज्ञाओं के एक प्रसिद्ध व्युत्पतिकार एवं वैयाकरण थे। इन्हें निरुक्तकार कहा गया है। निरुक्त को तीसरा वेदाङ्ग माना जाता है। यास्क ने पहले ‘निघण्टु’ नामक वैदिक शब्दकोश को तैयार किया। निरूक्त में ‘नैगम’ और दैवत नामक तीन काण्ड बारह अध्यायों में विभक्त है। यास्क भाषा शास्त्री था। उसे भाषा शास्त्रीय प्रणालियों का आदि आचार्य माना जाता है। वैदिक मंत्रों का अशुद्ध उच्चारण करने वाले व्यक्तियों की यास्क ने कटु आलोचना की है। उनका कथन है कि “स्वर और वर्ण से भ्रष्ट हुए मंत्र, शत्रु की भांति वाग्वज होकर यजमान को नष्ट कर देते हैं।
कुछ लोग ऋषि यस्क का जीवनकाल पाणिनि के पूर्व मानते हैं जबकि कुछ लोग पाणिनि के पश्चात। अतः उनका जीवनकाल ७०० ईसापूर्व से लेकर ५०० ईसापूर्व के बीच माना जाता है। Rishi Yask:-
He was the son of Rishi Yusk. Yask was a gotrakar sage born in the Bhrigukul. Lists of difficult words of Vedas or Nihandu, which were written by Prajapati Kashyapa. Rishi Yask wrote a commentary on it called Nirukta. In Vrihadaranyaka, he is described as a guru of Bhardwaj Rishi. Another disciple of Yasak, is said to be Jatukarnya. This was before Panini. It’s period is believed to be around 700 BC. To know the meaning of Nirukta Vedamantras, it was necessary to know their ‘Nirukti’ first. Difficult words that could not be solved by grammar. Nirukta was composed for their meaning. In this book, along with the explanation of Vedic words, information about grammar, linguistics, literature etc. is also available. Yask was a famous etymologist and grammarian of Vedic literature. These are called Niruktakar. Nirukta is considered the third Vedang. Yask prepared the first Vedic dictionary named ‘Nighantu’. Nirukta is divided into three khandas named ‘Naigam’ and ‘Daivat’ in twelve chapters. Yask was a linguist. He is considered the Adi Acharya of linguistic systems. Yasak has severely criticized the people, who pronounced Vedic mantras impurely. His statement is that “Mantras corrupted by tone and character, destroy the host by being eloquent like an enemy. Some people consider his lifetime of Rishi Yusk, before Panini, while some people consider it after Panini. Therefore, his lifetime is believed to be between 700 BC to 500 BC.
