ऋषि अगस्त
ऋषि अगस्त्य वशिष्ठ मुनि के बड़े भाई थे। इनका जन्म, अगस्त्यकुंड, काशी में हुआ था। इनकी पत्नी लोपामुद्रा विदर्भ देश की राजकुमारी थी।
विदर्भ राजा निमि की पुत्री अगस्त की पत्नी थी। ऋग्वेद में एक मंत्र दृष्टी के नाते इसका नाम है, विद्वानों के अनुसार विदर्भ राज में निमि नाम का कोई राजा नहीं हुआ। सम्भवतः राजा भीम हो। लोपा अपने साथ सौ दासियाँ और सौ कन्याएँ सेवा के लिए रखती थी। अपने शील से वह स्वजनों तथा सभी को सन्तुष्ट रखती थी। इन्हें सप्तर्षियों में से एक माना जाता है। ऋग्वेद में अगस्त नाम से कई सूक्त और मंत्र मिलते है। सम्भवतः ये अगस्त कुल के लोगों द्वारा रचित हों। मान्य और मान्दार्य भी इसके पैतृक नाम हैं। मान का वंशज होने के कारण भी इसे यह नाम प्राप्त हुआ होगा। ऋग्वेद में अगस्त ऋषि द्वारा रचे सूक्तों के अन्त में सूक्तकार के लिए यह उपाधि दी गई है। अगस्त को मान या मान्य और मान्दार्य मान्य कहा जाता है। मान, मानः इन ऋषियों का पैतृक नाम “मैत्रा वारूणि” बताया गया है। इन्द्र और मरुतों के झगड़े को मिटाकर मैत्री भाव करने वाला अगस्त है। अगस्त विरक्त था। परन्तु पित्रों की आज्ञानुसार इसे विदर्भाधिपति की राजकुमारी लोपा मुद्रा के साथ विवाह करना पड़ा। विदर्भ के निमि राजा ने बेटी के साथ अगस्त के विवाह पर राज्य भी दिया। लोपा की रुचि ऐश्वर्य पूर्ण थी और वह ऋषि को धन दौलत के लिए विशेष प्रेरित करती थी। अगस्त न चाहते हुए भी उसे सन्तुष्ट करने के लिए धन संग्रह करने लगा। वह धन के लिए तप व्यर्थ नहीं गंवाना चाहता था। इसलिए उसे यश प्राप्त न हुआ। लोपा मुद्रा की तीव्र इच्छा देखकर अगस्त ने श्रुतर्वन, ब्रन्ध्यश्व, त्रजदस्यु राजाओं को साथ लेकर इल्वल राजा की अपार सम्पत्ति ग्रहण की और लोपा को सन्तुष्ट किया।
अगस्त का अर्थ है। पर्वत का स्तंभन करने वाला ऐसी अगस्त शब्द की व्युतपत्ति है। अगस्त विध्य का गुरु था।

अगस्त के दक्षिण जाने के समय विंध्य ने इसे प्रणाम किया। इसने उसे खड़ा रहने को कहा। अगस्त पहले काशी में रहता था परन्तु विंध्याचल से मार्ग निकाल कर आवागमन प्रारम्भ करने के लिए इसने काशी त्याग दिया। अगस्त को दिए अभिवचन के अनुसार काशी विश्वेशर रामेश्वरं में आकर रहने लगे। काशी में रहने की इसकी इच्छा अपूर्ण रह गई। गोदावरी ने इसे वरदान दिया कि उन्तीसवें द्वापर युग में यह व्यास बनकर काशी वास करेगा। दक्षिण में बसने के बाद उसने एक द्वादश वर्षीय सत्र मनाया। इस सत्र के ब्राह्मणों को पिप्पल और अश्वत्थ नामक असुर खा डालते थे। उसका नाश शनि ने किया। इस सत्र में मृग आदि का पितरों को अर्पण करना बन्द करके पशु हिंसा बन्द कर दी गई। बनवास के समय दाशरथि राम अगस्त के आश्रम में आये। इसने राम को सोने और हीरों से सुशोभित सुन्दर धनुष, अमोघ बाण, अक्षय तुणीर स्वर्ण के खडग कोष सहित स्वर्ण का खड़ग दिया। राम को अगस्त के आश्रम में ब्रह्मा, अग्नि, विष्णु, इन्द्र, सूर्य, सोम, भग, कुबेर, श्रवाता, विधाता, वायु, नामराज, अनन्त, गायत्री, अष्टवसु, वरुण पाराहस्त, कार्तिकेय और धर्म के लिए योजित विभिन्न स्थान दिखाई दिए।
अगस्त ने अपने लिए निकला हुआ कमलकंद एक भूखे चण्डाल को दिया। लोपा के इध्यवाह दृढस्यु दृढद्यमन पुत्र थे। पुलस्त्य, पुलह तथा ऋतु की सन्तति अगस्त गोत्रीय कहलाती है क्योंकि अगस्त के पुत्र इद्यवाह वैवस्वत मन्वन्तर के क्रतु ने दत्तक् पुत्र बना लिया था।
पुलह की सन्तान राक्षस थी। उसने दृढस्यु को दत्तक लिया। पौलस्त्य ने भी अगस्त पुत्र दृढद्युम्न को गोद लिया। विभिन्न पुराणों में अगस्त पुत्रों के विभिन्न नाम हैं। मत्स्य पुराण में अगस्त को लंकावासी कहा गया है। इसे दक्षिण का स्वामी और विजेता कहा गया है। इसका आश्रम मलय पर्वत पर था। महानदी के पास महेन्द्र के साथ भी अगस्त का सम्बन्ध है। नासिक में इसका आश्रम है। जावा आदि द्वीपों में भी इसके मन्दिर हैं। विदर्भ महाराष्ट्र का देश है। वहाँ की राजकुमारी इसकी पत्नी है। इसे दक्षिणवासी ही कहा गया है। परन्तु गंगा, यमुना, काशी आदि के साथ इसका सम्बन्ध आया है। विंध्याचल को नम्र बनाकर अथवा उसपर विजय पाकर यह दक्षिण में गया, इसकी पुष्टि होती है।
अगस्त्य नामक तारा भाद्र माह में दक्षिण की और उदित होता है, उसका सम्बन्ध अगस्त ऋषि से जोड़ दिया गया है।

अगस्त के ग्रन्थ : वराह पुराण में पशुपालोपख्यान में अगस्त गीत, पंच रात्रकी अगस्त- संहिता, स्कन्ध पुराण की अगस्त- संहिता, शिव संहिता, भास्कर संहिता आदि है। गोत्रकार-ऋषि करम, कौशल्य, क्रतुवंशोदव, गांधरकायन, पौलस्त्य पौलह, मयोभुव, शंकर (करट) सुमेधस यह गोत्रकार अगस्त, मयोभुव तथा महेन्द्र तीन प्रवरों के हैं। अगस्त, पौर्णिमास। अगस्त धारण और पौर्णिमास तीन प्रवरों के हैं। मंत्रकार ऋषि :
मत्स्य पुराण के अनुसार अगस्त, इन्द्रबाहु दृढयुद्यन तथा ब्रह्माण्ड पुराण के अनुसार अगण, अय, हढायु तथा विघ्मवाह है। काशी के राजा प्रतर्दन के पोता और वत्स के पुत्र अलर्क ने लोपामुद्रा की कृपा से दीर्घायु प्राप्त की। इससे स्पष्ट है कि अगस्त निमि और अलर्क का समकालीन था। अलर्क ने विपुल धन राशि लोपा को दी।

लोपा मुद्रा : विदर्भ राजा निमि की पुत्री अगस्त की पत्नी थी। ऋग्वेद में एक मंत्र दृष्टी के नाते इसका नाम है, विद्वानों के अनुसार विदर्भ राज में निमि नाम का कोई राजा नहीं हुआ। सम्भवतः भीम हो। लोपा अपने साथ सौ दासियाँ और सौ कन्याएँ सेवा के लिए रखती थी। अपने शील से वह स्वजनों तथा सभी को सन्तुष्ट रखती थी। इसका पिता अगस्त के साथ इसका विवाह नहीं करना चाहता था। परन्तु इसने पिता से कहकर ऋषि के साथ विवाह किया। ऋषि की आज्ञा से इसने राजसी पहरावा उतार कर वल्कल और मृगचर्म पहन लिया। अगस्त इसे गंगाद्वार ले गया. और घोर तपस्या में लग गया। यह उसकी सेवा में तत्पर रहती। इसकी सेवा से प्रसन्न होकर अगस्त ने इसका उपयोग पत्नी रूप में करना चाहा तो इसने स्पष्ट कहा, “इस तापसी वेष में तपस्वी की पर्णशाला में नहीं बल्कि मेरे पिता जैसे राजमहल में अगस्त ने विपुल सम्पत्ति लाकर इसे दी। अगस्त से उत्पन्न इसका पुत्र दृढस्यु अथवा इध्यवाह था। कहीं—2 पुत्र दृढच्युत और उसका पुत्र इध्यवाह लिखा है। 
English Translation.
Rishi August
Sage Agastya was the elder brother of Vashishtha Muni. He was born in Agastyakund, Kashi. His wife Lopamudra was the princess of Vidarbha country. She was daughter of Vidarbha king Nimi . She is named after a mantra sight in Rigveda, according to scholars there was no king named Nimi in Vidarbha Raj. Probably he may be the King Bhima. Lopa used to keep hundred maids and hundred girls with her for service. She used to keep her relatives and everyone satisfied with her modesty.
Rishi August is considered, one of the Saptarishis. Many hymns are found in Rigveda by the name of Agastya. Probably these hymns were composed by the people of August clan. Manya and Mandarya are also his ancestral names. He must have got this name because he was a descendant of Maan. In the Rigveda, this title has been given to the suktakar at the end of the suktas composed by sage Agastya. August is called Maan or Maanya and Maandarya Maanya. Maan, Maan:.
The ancestral name of these sages has been described as “Maitra Varuni”. August is the one, who finished the quarrel between Indra and the Maruts. August was initially disinterested to marry, but according to the order of the ancestors, he had to marry Lopa Mudra, the princess of Vidarbhadhipati. Nimi Raja of Vidarbha also gave his kingdom to him, consequent to marriage of Agastya with his daughter. Lopa’s interest was opulent and she used to specially inspire the sage, for wealth. August started collecting money to satisfy her even without any desires. He did not want to waste his penance for money. That’s why he did not get fame. Seeing Lopa Mudra’s strong desire, Agastya along with Shrutarvan, Brindhyasva, Trajadasyu kings took the immense wealth of Ilval king and satisfied Lopa.
Meaning of August. Such is the etymology of the word Agastya, the pillar of the mountain. August was the teacher of Vidhya. Vindhya bowed down to it at the time of August going towards south. She asked him to stand still.
August used to live in Kashi earlier, but he left Kashi to start another journey by finding a route through Vindhyachal. According to the Puranas, August, started living in Rameshwaram and his desire to live in Kashi remained unfulfilled. Godavari gave it a boon that in the twenty-ninth Dwapar Yuga, he would become Vyas and reside in Kashi. After settling down in the South India, he observed a twelve-year session. Asuras named Pippal and Ashwath used to eat the Brahmins of this region. Shani destroyed the asura. Animal violence was stopped in this session by stopping the offering of deer etc. to the ancestors.
Lord Ram had once come to the hermitage of Agastya at the time of exile. He gave Ram a golden khadag along with a beautiful bow decorated with gold and diamonds, and several unfailing arrows, Akshay Tunir gold khadag kosh. In the hermitage of August, Rama saw Brahma, Agni, Vishnu, Indra, Surya, Soma, Bhaga, Kubera, Shravata, Vidhata, Vayu, Namraj, Ananta, Gayatri, Ashtavasu, Varuna Parahasta, Kartikeya and various other great rishis committed for Dharma.
August gave a lotus flower to lord Ram. The flower had come out for him. Lopa’s Idhyavah Durhasyu was the son of Durdhadyman. The progeny of Pulastya, Pulah and Ritu are called August gotriya because Idyavaha, the son of August, was adopted by Kratu of Vaivaswat Manvantar.
The children of Pulah were demons. He adopted Durhasyu. Paulastya also adopted Augistya’s son Durdhadyumna. There are different names of Augistya’s sons in different Puranas. In Matsya Purana, August has been called Lankavasi. He has also been called the lord and conqueror of the South. His ashram was on the Malay mountain. Agastya had good relation with Mahendra near Mahanadi. His ashram is in Nashik. There are many temples on his name, in the islands like Java also. Vidarbha was a country of Maharashtra. And has been associated with Ganga, Yamuna rivers and Kashi etc. It is confirmed that he went to the south by making Vindhyachal or after conquering it. A star named Augustya rises towards the south in the month of Bhadra, its relation has been linked to the sage Augustya.
Texts of August: In Varaha Purana there is August Geet in Pashupalopakhyan, Panch Ratri’s August Code, Skandha Purana’s August Code, Shiva Code, Bhaskar Code etc. Gotrakar-Rishi Karam, Kaushalya, Kratuvanshodav, Gandharkayan, Paulastya Paulah, Mayobhuv, Shankar (Karat) Sumedhas. According to Matsya Purana, Agastya, Indrabahu Durdhayudyan and according to Brahmanda Purana are Agan, Hadayu and Vighmawah. Alarka, the grandson of King Pratardana of Kashi and son of Vatsa, attained longevity by the grace of Lopamudra. It is clear from this that August was a contemporary of Nimi and Alarka. Alarka has once given, lot of money to Lopa. Lopa Mudra was the daughter of Vidarbha king Nimi was the wife of Agastya. She is named after a mantra sight in Rigveda, according to scholars there was no king named Nimi in Vidarbha Raj. Probably he must be king Bhima. Lopa used to keep hundred maids and hundred girls with her for services. She used to keep her relatives and everyone satisfied with her modesty. Her father did not want her to marry August. But she married the sage after arguing with her father. By the order of the sage, he took off his royal dress and wore Valkal and deerskin. August took her to Gangadwar. And got engaged in severe penance. She was ready to serve him. Pleased with her service, August wanted to marry her. He said, “Not in the ascetic’s parnashala in this austere dress, but in the royal palace like my father, August gave immense wealth. Her son, born from Agastya, was Durhasyu or Idhyawah. Somewhere it is mentioned that she had two sons, Drahchyut and Idhyawah.
