The ancient Indian city of Valabhi, thus became the centre of the Maitraka dynasty from the fifth to the eighth
centuries CE. In Saurastra (later Gujarat), western India, it was situated northwest of the port of Bhavnagar on an
inlet of the Gulf of Khambhat (Cambay). The Maitraka dynasty is believed to have originated from the Western Kshatrapas, who ruled western India before them. They established their capital at Valabhi, which became a significant centre for
trade and culture.
