महर्षि रोम हर्षण या लोम हर्षण रोमहर्षण वेदव्यास के परम प्रिय शिष्य थे। रोमहर्षण के स्तुति पाठ तथा शास्त्रों-पुराणों में उनकी रुचियों को देखकर व्यास जी ने रोमहर्षण को अपना शिष्य बनाया था। इसके पिता क्षत्रिय और माँ ब्राह्मण थीं। रोमहर्षण ने पुराण विद्या का ऐसा अध्ययन किया कि उनकी प्रतिभा चमत्कृत हो गयी। व्यास जी की कृपा से पुराणों-शास्त्रों का उन्होंने गहन अध्ययन किया और कई ग्रन्थों की रचना की। व्यास जी ने रोमहर्षण को समस्त पुराणों को पढ़ाया और आशीर्वाद दिया कि ‘तुम समस्त पुराणों के वक्ता बनोगे। रोमहर्षण सबको पुराणों की कथा सुनाया करते थे उग्रश्रवस सौती लोमहर्षण (या रोमहर्षन) के पुत्र हैं ज़िन्हे भागवत सहित कई पुराणो के वर्णनकर्ता के रूप में चित्रित किया गया है ! यह सूत जाति का तथा व्यास का शिष्य था पद्म पुराण के अनुसार, सूत लोगों को वेदों का अधिकार था। सूत जाति का मुख्य कार्य सारथी बनना और वंश कीर्तन व स्तुति पाठ (इतिहास लेखन) होता था। इनके आचार-विचार ब्राह्मणों जैसे थे। मागध लोगों को वेद-अधिकार प्राप्त नहीं थे। शौनक आदि ऋषियों की प्रार्थना पर रोम हर्षण ने साठ हजार ऋषियों की उपस्थिति में नैमिषारण्य में ब्रह्म, वायु ब्रह्मवैवर्त, गरुड़ नारद, भागवत पुराण का कथन किया वह इन पुराणों का कथन करके ग्यारहवें पुराण का कथन कर रहा था कि बलराम का आगमन हुआ। सभी ऋषियों ने उसे उत्थापन दिया। परन्तु रोम हर्षण ने व्रतस्थ होने के कारण उत्थापन नहीं दिया। क्रोध में आकर बलराम ने इसका वध कर दिया। इसकी मृत्यु के पश्चात् शेष साढ़े सात पुराणों का कथन इसके पुत्र उग्रश्रवस ने चलाया। इसकी मृत्यु तिथि आषाढ़ शुक्ल द्वादशी है। द्वादशी के दिन पुराण की कथा नहीं कहीं जाती। आजकल जो पुराण उपलब्ध हैं, उसमें कई में रोमहर्षण का संवाद मिलता है, कई मे उग्रश्रवा का मिलता है। रोमहर्षण के जीवनकाल में ही उग्रश्रवा को ऋषि तथा ब्राह्मण समाज में बड़ी प्रतिष्ठा प्राप्त थी। उग्रश्रवा ऋषियों की श्रेणी में थे। इससे विदित होता है कि प्राचीन काल में जाति से अधिक गुण का सम्मान होता था। प्राचीन काल में प्रतिष्ठा प्राप्त करने तथा विद्या अर्जित करने में जाति बाधक नहीं होती थी।
English Translation.
Maharishi Rome Harshan or Lom Harshan. Romaharshan was the most beloved disciple of Vedvyas. Vyas ji made Romaharshan his disciple, after seeing his interest in religious scriptures and Puranas. His father was a Kshatriya and mother a Brahmin. Romaharshan studied Purana Vidya in such a way that his talent became miraculous. With the grace of Vyas ji, he studied Puranas and scriptures deeply and composed many books. Vyas ji taught all the Puranas to Romaharshan and blessed him that ‘you will become the speaker of all the Puranas’. Romharshan used to tell stories of Puranas to everyone. Ugrasravas was the son of Romaharshan, Who has been portrayed as the narrator of many Puranas including Bhagwat. He belonged to the Sut caste and was a disciple of Vyasa. According to the Padma Purana, the Sut people, had right to the Vedas, while the main work of the Sut caste was to become a charioteer and to recite Vansh Kirtan, Stuti Path and history writing. Their conduct and thoughts were like Brahmins. The Magadha people did not have authority over the Vedas. On the prayer of Sage Shaunak, Rome Harshan once, recited Brahma, Vayu Brahmavaivarta, Garuda Narad, Bhagwat Purana in Naimisharanya in the presence of sixty thousand sages. All the sages gave him upliftment. But Rome Harshan did not give the upliftment because he was fasting. Balram killed him in anger. After his death, the statement of the remaining seven and a half Puranas was run by his son Ugrashravas. His death date is Ashadha Shukla Dwadashi. Since then there is a tradition among Hindus that the story of Purana is not read anywhere on the day of Dwadashi. In most of the Puranas, the dialogues of Romaharshan are found. During the lifetime of Romaharshan, Ugrashrava had great prestige among Rishis and Brahmins. Ugrashrava is considered among most respected sages of Sanatana Dharma. It is known from this fact that diring ancient times, more respect was given to individual”s attributes instead of his caste. In ancient times, caste was not any hindrance in gaining prestige and learning.
