The Maitrakas rose to prominence around the 5th century CE under the leadership of Bhatarka. They were initially subordinates of the Gupta Empire but later asserted their independence. The Maitrakas ruled over a region that included parts of modern-day Gujarat and Rajasthan. They were known for their contributions to literature, art, and culture. The
Valabhi Prakrit language, an early form of the Gujarati language, flourished during their rule.
