ऋषि कण्व कण्व दो हुए हैं । एक अंगिरस गोत्र उत्पन्न तथा दूसरा कश्यप वंशीय कण्व काश्यप मेघातिथि के पुत्र थे। इनका आश्रम हरिद्वार के निकट मालिनी नदी के तट पर था। विश्वामित्र की पुत्री शकुन्तला एवं उनके पुत्र भरत का पालन-पोषण इन्होंने ही किया था। कण्व वैदिक में काल सनातन धर्म के विख्यात ऋषि थे, जिनके लिए ऋग्वेद के कुछ भजनों का वर्णन किया गया है। भरत के नाम से हमारे देश का नाम भारत वर्ष रखा गया सोनभद्र में जिला मुख्यालय से आठ किलो मीटर की दूरी पर कैमूर शृंखला के शीर्ष स्थल पर स्थित कण्व ऋषि की तपस्थली है जो कंडाकोट नाम से जानी जाती है| शकुन्तला और दुष्यन्त के गंधर्व विवाह की भी इन्होंनें पुष्टि की। परन्तु जब दुष्यन्त ने शकुन्तला को अपनाने से इन्कार कर दिया तो वे बहुत दुःखी हुए। भरत के यज्ञ में कण्व ऋषि मुख्य याजक थे। भरत ने उन्हें एक हजार पदम घोड़े तथा एक हजार स्वर्ण मुद्राएं दक्षिणा में दीं। इनका पुत्र वाहलीक काण्व था। एक अन्य कण्व काश्यप हुए हैं। उनकी पत्नी का नाम आर्यावती था। उपाध्याय, दीक्षित, पाठक, शुक्ल, मिश्र, अग्निहोत्री, द्विवेदी, त्रिवेदी, पाण्डेय और चतुर्वेदी उनके पुत्रों के नाम थे। आगे चलकर इन नामों से ब्राह्मणों की उपजातियाँ बन गईं। इस कण्व ने अपनी संस्कृत वाणी से मिश्र देश के दस हजार मलेच्छों को वंश में किया और उनमें से पृथु को क्षत्रिय बनाकर राजपुत्र नगर का राज्य प्रदान किया। कण्व सात ऋषियों यानी सप्तऋषियों की सूची में है। कण्व का एक पुत्र मेधातिथि था। कण्व का उल्लेख महाभारत में शकुंतला के सौतेले पिता के रूप में भी किया गया है। कण्व या कर्णेश शुक्ल यजुर वेद की एक वैदिक शाखा के संस्थापक का भी नाम है, जो सनातन धर्म की उस धार्मिक शाखा का नाम है, कण्व शाखा। कण्व या कर्णेश भी कई राजकुमारों और राजवंशों के संस्थापकों और कई लेखकों का नाम है। कण्व (कर्णेश) राजा वासुदेव कण्व या पहली शताब्दी ईसा पूर्व के वंशज हैं कण्व ऋषि शकुंतला का अनुसरण करने वाले प्रसिद्ध संतों में से एक थे। शकुंतला अप्सरा मेनका और विश्वामित्र की पुत्री और राजा दुष्यंत की पत्नी थीं। ऋग्वेद के 8वें मंडल के 103 सूक्तों वाले अधिकांश मंत्रों का उच्चारण महर्षि कण्व ने किया था। महर्षि कण्व ने एक बार सोमयज्ञ किया था और उसके बाद एक स्मृति की रचना की, जिसे अब ‘कणवस्मृति’ के नाम से जाना जाता है। कुछ सूक्तों में भी अनेक ऋषि मुनि हैं, किन्तु ‘प्रधान्येन व्यापदेश भवन्ति’ के अनुसार महर्षि कण्व को अष्टम मण्डल का ऋषि कहा गया है। इनमें लौकिक ज्ञान-विज्ञान और अनिष्ट-निवारण से संबंधित उपयोगी मंत्र हैं।
English Translation.
Rishi Kanva There are two Rishi Kanvas. One was born in the Angiras clan and the other was the son of Kanva Kashyap Meghatithi, a descendant of Kashyap. His ashram was on the banks of Malini river near Haridwar. Vishwamitra’s daughter Shakuntala and her son Bharat were brought up by him. Kanva was a famous sage of the Vedic times “Sanatan Dharma”, to whom some hymns of the Rigveda are being attributed. Our country was named Bharat after the name of Shakuntala’s son “Bharat”. At a distance of eight kilometers from the district headquarter in Sonbhadra, there is a place, which is known as Kandakot, situated at the top of the Kaimur range. At this place Rishi Kanva performed tapasya. The rishi also arranged the Gandharva marriage of Shakuntala and Dushyant. However, when Dushyant refused to accept Shakuntala, as his wife, he was very sad. Kanva Rishi was the chief priest in various sacrificial ceremonies performed by Bharat. Bharat gave him one thousand padam horses and one thousand gold coins as dakshina. Rishi’s son was Vahlika Kanva. Another Rishi Kanva was from Kashyap lineage. His wife’s name was Aryavati. Upadhyaya, Dixit, Pathak, Shukla, Mishra, Agnihotri, Dwivedi, Trivedi, Pandeya and Chaturvedi were the names of his sons. Later on these names became sub-castes of the Brahmins.
This Rishi Kanva, , captured ten thousand Malechch, of Mishr country and made Prithu a Kshatriya king among them and gave him the kingdom of Rajputra Nagar. Kanva is one sage in the list of seven sages i.e. Saptarishis. Kanva had a son Medhatithi. Kanva is also mentioned in the Mahabharata as the stepfather of Shakuntala. Kanva or Karnesh Shukl, is also the name of the founder of a Vedic branch of the Yajur Veda, the name of that religious branch of Sanatana Dharma, the Kanva branch. Kanva or Karnesh is also the name of many princes and founders of dynasties and of many authors. Kanva (Karnesh) is a descendant of King Vasudeva Kanva or 1st century BC. Kanva was one of the famous sages who followed sage Shakuntala. Shakuntala was the daughter of Apsara Menaka and Vishwamitra and the wife of King Dushyanta. Most of the mantras comprising 103 Suktas of the 8th Mandala of Rigveda were pronounced by Maharishi Kanva. Maharishi Kanva, once performed Somayagya and after that composed a Smriti, which is now known as ‘Kanavasmriti’. There are many sages in some Suktas as well, but according to ‘Pradhanyen Vyapadesh Bhavanti’, Maharishi Kanva is known as, the sage of the eighth circle. In these scriptures, there are useful mantras related to cosmic knowledge sciences for evil-prevention.
