ऋषि कात्यायन कात्यायन नाम के कई ऋषि हुए है एक कात्यायन नाम के ऋषि विश्वामिंत्र के वंश में जिन्होंने श्रोत, गृह्य और प्रतिहार सूत्रों की रचना की थी ! दूसरे गोमिलपुत्र थे जिन्होंने ‘छंदोपरिशिष्टकर्मप्रदीप’ की रचना की थी और तीसरे कात्यायन वररुचि सोमदत्त के पुत्र थे जो पाणिनीय सूत्रों के प्रसिद्ध वार्तिककार थे आंगिरस, काश्यप, कौशिक, भार्गव को भी कात्यायन ऋषि माना जाता है अष्टाध्यायी का वार्ताकार कात्यायन याज्ञवल्क्य का पौत्र था। यह एक व्याकरणकार था। कात्यायन ने पाणिनि के लगभग 1500 सूत्रों पर वार्तिक लिखे। वार्तिकों का मुख्य उद्देश्य पाणिनि के सूत्रों का विशदीकरण कर उन्हें समझने के लिए सरल बनाना है। कई विद्वान इसे पाणिनि का समकालीन मानते हैं। कथा सरित सागर में इसका सम्बन्ध नन्द से आया है अतः इसका काल 500-300 ई० पूर्व पड़ता है। महर्षि कात्यायन शास्त्रों के बड़े ज्ञानी व बहुत सी विद्याओं के ज्ञाता थे। ऋषि कात्यायन की यह इच्छा थी की देवी स्वयं उनकी पुत्री के रूप में उनके घर जन्म लें। इस मनोकामना को पूर्ण करने के लिए मन में दृढ़ निष्ठा के साथ महर्षि ने घने जंगलों में कठोर तपस्या की। कात्यायन ऋषि की घोर तपस्या से प्रसन्न हो कर माँ ने उनकी प्रार्थना को स्वीकार कर उनके घर पुत्री रूप में जन्म लेने की इच्छा मन ली। जब कुछ समय बाद महिषासुर नाम का दानव पृथ्वी लोक पर आतंक मचाने लगा तब त्रिदेव यानि ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश ने मिलकर एक तेज शक्ति से देवी को उत्पन्न किया। इस देवी की सबसे ले पूजा कात्यायन ऋषि ने की थी जिसके बाद कात्यायनी देवी पड़ गया। देवी कात्यायनी ने आश्विन कृष्ण चतुर्दशी को जन्म लिया ! देवी कात्यायनी ने आश्विन कृष्ण चतुर्दशी को जन्म लिया और शुक्ल पक्ष की सप्तमी, अष्टमी और नवमी तिथि तक कात्यायन ऋषि की पूजा स्वीकार कर दशमी को महिषासुर का वध किया था। देवी कात्यायनी अत्यंत तेजस्वी स्वरूप की देवी हैं। यह चार भुजाओं वाली देवी हैं। उनकी दाहिनी तरफ के हाथों में वरमुद्रा व अभयमुद्रा है तथा उनके बाएं हाथों में कमल तथा तलवार है। सिंह, देवी कात्यायनी का वाहन है। शास्त्रों की मान्यताओं के अनुसार देवी कात्यायनी की उपासना से भक्तों को सरलता से धर्म, अर्थ और मोक्ष की प्राप्ति होती है। तथा साधक को इस लोक के सभी सुखों को भोगने का अवसर मिलता है। देवी की पूजा से विवाह में आने वाली अड़चने भी दूर हो जाती है एवं विवाह भी शीघ्र ही हो जाता hai देवी कात्यायनी को माँ दुर्गा के छठवें रूप माना जाता है ! Sage Katyayan. There have been many sages named Katyayan. One such sage namely, Katyayan, was in the lineage of sage Vishwamintra, who had composed the Shrot, Grihya and Pratihar Sutras. The second sage with this name, was Gomilputra who composed ‘Chhando-parishtha-karma-pradipa’ and the third Katyayana, Vararuchi, was the son of Somdatta, who was a famous narrator of Paniniya Sutras. Angiras, Kashyap, Kaushik, Bhargava are also considered as Katyayan sages.
Ashtadhyayi’s interlocutor, the grandson of Yajnavalkya, was a Katyayana, . He was a grammarian. Katyayana composed Panini and also wrote Vartika on about 1500 sutras. The main objective of Vartikas, is to elaborate the sutras of Panini and make them, simple, for understanding. Many scholars consider it a contemporary of Panini. In the story of Sarit Sagar, he is related to Nanda, so his period falls before 500-300 BC. Maharishi Katyayan was a great scholar of the scriptures and a knower of many other disciplines. This was the wish of the sage Katyayan that the goddess herself should be born in his house as his daughter. To fulfill this wish, Maharishi did tapasya in dense forests, with a strong determination in mind. Pleased with his tapasya, the mother accepted his request and accepted his wish to be born as a daughter in his house. After some time, when the demon named Mahishasura started creating terror on the earth, then Tridev i.e. Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh together created a goddess blessed with many strong powerful weapons. This goddess was first worshiped by sage Katyayan, there, she became Katyayani Devi. Goddess Katyayani took birth on Ashwin Krishna Chaturdashi and killed Mahishasura on Dashami by accepting the worship of Katyayan Rishi, till Saptami, Ashtami and Navami Tithi of Shukla Paksha. Goddess Katyayani possess extremely stunning attributes & nature. She is a goddess with four arms. She has Varamudra and Abhayamudra in her right hands and lotus and sword in her left hands. Lion is the vehicle of the Goddess. According to some beliefs given in some scriptures, the devotees easily attain Dharma, Artha and Moksha, by worshiping the Goddess Katyayani. And the seeker, also gets the opportunity to enjoy all the pleasures of this materialistic world. By worshiping the Goddess, all obstacles in one’s marriage also go away and his marriage happens soon. Goddess Katyayani is considered as the sixth form of Maa Durga.
