English Translation.
Rishi Shakalya
Shakalya was the chief among the Vedic disciples of Vyasa. In mythological literature he was called Veda Mitra or Dev Mitra Shaklya. In the Mahabharata, Shaklya is called Brahma Rishi. This sage worshiped Shiva. Shiva gave him the boon, that he will become a great granthakar.”
Rishi Shaklya was the initiator of the branch of the Rig Veda. Apart from the Rig Samhita literature, two of his works, Shakya Samhita and Shakya Mat, are available. Shakalya or Rishi Vidagdha
was an ancient sage. He was the first sage who had corrected the text of Rigveda and started the method of memorizing the verses separately by breaking the treaties of the sentences.
King Janaka of Videha had appointed Shakalya as Raj Pandit. His rival was Rishi Yajnavalkya, who was also Rajarishi. According to mythology,
Dev means one who has become powerful with divine traits. The dev powers reside in our brains.
It is by his inspiration that man gets into welfare, charity and religious activities. It is not easy to know how many behavioral traits, one possess.
Once the king Janak performed a great yagya. At the end of the Yagya, he announced that he has one thousand precious cows and he wants to donate these cows to the greatest religious philosopher. Hearing this announcement of Maharaj, Rishi Yajnavalkya ordered his disciples to drive the cows to his ashram.
However other sages asked Yajnavalkya that why he considered himself to be the biggest philosopher?
However Yajnavalkya said, “I am just a cow servant”
Even after saying this, the sages did not like that the sage Yajnavalkya should take all the cows to his hermitage. But no one had the guts to prove that he was a greater philosopher than Yajnavalkya.
However they were able to convince
the famous scholar Shakalya to debate with Rishi Yajnavalkya. Shakalya stood up and said – O Yajnavalkya! You cannot take cows like this. I will question you. Yajnavalkya said in a calm manner – O learned Shakalya! Just like half-burnt wood gets extinguished when taken out of the fire, in the same way these sages are provoking you. But the learned Shakalya did not stop. He started asking complicated questions from the sage Yajnavalkya. He wanted to know, “how many traits are their in the form of gods”
Then Yajnavalkya first told 33 hundred gods, the second time 33, the third time three, the fourth time two, the fifth time one and a half and finally only one Prana was called a god. Then Shakalya asked – O Yajnavalkya ! Tell me who are the 33 hundred gods. Then Yajnavalkya replied, – O learned Shakalya! Divine powers in the form of divine knowledge are very subtle and not known to all. In fact, there are only 33 known divine traits. The source of all these divine traits is only one great God, which is called “Prana” Just as the physical Prana is the supporter and driver of the bodies of all living beings, so is the Lord who is the cause of all the gods in the form of power of knowledge, He is called Prana in the Vedas. The entire Rishi-Mandal was amazed at Yajnavalkya’s philosophy. Vijigishabhaav of the learned Shakalya was broken. Yajnavalkya spoke in a calm voice – Shakalya! Out of curiosity, you have asked very deep questions, go, you will leave your life in the coming date. No one will be able to even bring your bones to your house and the entire sages saw that the scholar Shakalya could not bear the unbearable pain of defeat and the next day he died. Shakalya’s disciples were carrying his bones, so thieves mistaking them for wealth stole them too. The sage also heard a voice from sky.

“What comes out of one’s mouth suddenly, should never be asked with curiosity”
