Rishi Uddalak

ऋषि उद्दालक:
उद्दालक ऋषि आपोद और धौम्य का शिष्य था। इस ऋषि के साथ एक प्रसिद्ध कथा जुड़ी है। एक बार गुरू ने इसे खेत में पानी रोकने को कहा। इसके प्रयास से पानी नहीं रुका, तो वह स्वयं मेंढ़ में लेट गया और अपने आस पास मिट्टी लगा ली। बहुत देर तक शिष्य लौटा नहीं तो गुरूजी को चिन्ता हुई। गुरू इसकी खोज में निकले। वे ऊँची आवाज में उद्दालक को पुकारने लगे। रात्रि का समय था। एक ओर से धीमी सी आवाज आई, “गुरू जी मैं यहां हूं।” शीत से उद्दालक अर्द्धमूर्च्छित हो रहा था। गुरु जी उसे आश्रम में ले आए और उसका उपचार किया। गुरू के आशीर्वाद और अपने तप से उद्दालक प्रमुख ऋषि बना। उद्दालक का विवाह कुशिक की पुत्री से हुआ। उनके दो पुत्र श्वेत केतु और नचिकेता तथा पुत्री सुजाता थी। सुजाता का विवाह ऋषि कहोल से हुआ। ऋषि कहोल याज्ञवल्क्य के समकालीन तथा ऋषि उद्दालक का शिष्य था। इसने गुरू की सेवा इतनी लग्न से की, कि गुरू ने अपनी बेटी सुजाता का विवाह इससे कर दिया। सुजाता से ऋषि कहोल को अष्टवक्र पुत्र हुआ।
मनोरमा या मनवर तीर्थस्थल उद्दालक ऋषि की तपस्थली है।
जहां मन रमे, वही मनोरमा और जहां मन का मांगा वर मिले वही मनवर है।
गोंडा, जिले के दर्शनीय इटियाथोक के स्थान पर प्रत्येक वर्ष कार्तिक मास में पूर्णमासी को विशाल मेला लगता है। लोग यहां आकर स्थित सरोवर में स्नान कर दान आदि देते हैं। प्राचीनकाल में यहां महर्षि उद्दालक मुनि का आश्रम था। यहां पर एक बड़ा सरोवर है जिसे मनवर या मनोरमा के नाम से जाना जाता है। इस स्थान महाभारत के शल्य पर्व में वर्णित है। महाराजा दशरथ के यहां पुत्रेष्टि यज्ञ करते समय श्रृंगी ऋषि ने सरस्वती देवी का आह्वान मनोरमा के नाम से किया। इससे वे मनोरमा नदी के रूप में प्रकट हुई। उद्दालक ऋषि के पुत्र नचिकेता ने मनवर से थोड़ी दूर स्थित तारी परसोइया नामक स्थान पर ऋषियों व मनीषियों को नासिकेत पुराण सुनाया था। नासिकेत पुराण में मनोरमा के महत्व का वर्णन किया गया है-
अन्य क्षेत्रें कृतं पापं काशी क्षेत्रे विनश्यति.

English Translation.
Rishi Uddalak:
Uddalak was a disciple of the sages Apod and Dhaumya. A famous legend is associated with this sage.
Once his teacher asked him to stop water in the field. He tried his best but his efforts couldn’t fructify and he couldn’t stop the water, so he himself laif down in the puddle and applied mud around him. As the disciple did not return for a long time, the teacher was worried. He went out in search of his disciple. He started calling Uddalak in a loud voice. It was night. A soft voice came from one side, “Master, I am here.” Uddalak was becoming semi-conscious from the cold. Guru ji brought him to the ashram and treated him.
With Guru’s blessings and his severe penance, Uddalak became a sage. Uddalak was married to the daughter of Kushik. He had two sons, White Ketu and Nachiketa, and a daughter, Sujata. Sujata was married to sage Kahola. Sage Kahola was a contemporary of Yajnavalkya and a disciple of Sage Uddalaka. He served the Guru with such passion that the Guru got his daughter Sujata married to him. Rishi Kahol had a son Ashtavakra from Sujata. Manorama or Manavar pilgrimage is the sacred tapasya place of the sage Uddalak.
Manorama means where the mind is engrossed, i.e where one gets the desired boon of the mind, that means Manvar.
A huge fair is held every year on the full moon day in the month of Kartik at this place of scenic beauty in Gonda district. People come here and take a bath in the lake and donate selflessly etc. In ancient times there was a big gurukul of Maharishi Uddalak Muni. This place is mentioned in Shalya Parva of Mahabharata. While performing Putreshti Yagya at the place of Maharaja Dasaratha, Shringi Rishi invoked Goddess Saraswati in the name of Manorama. From this she appeared in the form of Manorama river. Nachiketa, the son of Uddalak Rishi, narrated the Nasiket Purana to sages and sages at a place called Tari Parasoiya, a little far from Manvar. The importance of Manorama has been described in Nasiket Purana-
“Anya kshetre Kritam Papam Kashi Kshetre Vinashyati.
