Indra
In Hindu mythology, Indra is known as  king of the devtas. Heaven is his kingdom.
Lord Indra is associated with lightning, weather & thunder, storms.
He is identical with European deities like Jupiter & Zeus.
Evidences of presence of Indra as a deity, are available on several ancient Indian Inscriptions.
In the later stages of evolution of hinduism, Indra is no longer worshipped in temples.  However he is recognised as  a god of rain by all hindus worldwide.
इन्द्र
प्रत्येक मन्वन्तर में एक इन्द्र होता है। सहस्रों यज्ञों के पश्चात् इन्द्र का पद मिलता हैं। इसका मुख्य कार्य प्रजा का संरक्षण करना है। प्रत्येक मन्वन्तर में भिन्न-2 इन्द्र होते हैं। परन्तु उनके गुण व कर्म एक जैसे रहते है। इन्द्र के परामर्शदाता सप्तर्षि होते हैं। गंधर्व व अपसराएं इसका ऐश्वर्य बढ़ाते हैं। जब यह जगत् की व्यवस्था सुचारू रूप से नहीं कर पाता तो सभी देव इसकी सहायता करते हैं।
इन्द्र पद बड़ी कठिनाई से प्राप्त होता है अतः जब इसके खोने का रंचमात्र भी सन्देह होता है तो उसमें इन्द्र विघ्न डालता है। यथा विश्वामित्र की तपस्या न करने के लिए इसने मेनका को भेजा। नगर पृथु तथा किए ! अश्यमेद यज्ञों के घोडे चुराकर इसने विघ्न  डाला !  इन्द्र की पत्नी शची या इन्द्राणी
कहलाती है। ऋग्वेद के अनुसार इन्द्र और अंगीरा  ऋषी का परस्पर सम्बंध  है ! इसके अस्त्र शस्त्र वज्र धनुषवाण, भाला, फेन आदि हैं।
इन्द्र वर्षा का देवता है। इसे पुरन्दर देव भी कहते हैं। कहा जाता है कि इसने बिजली पैदा की थी। इन्द्र के साथ कई कथाएं जुड़ी हैं एक बार कश्यप पुत्रकामेष्टि यज्ञ कर रहा था। देवताओं के साथ इन्द्र व बालखिल्य भी इसकी सहायता कर रहे थे। सारे बाल खिल्य मिलकर एक समिध ले जा रहे थे। मार्ग में थोडे से जल में वे डूबने, तैरने लगे। यह देखकर इन्द्र तिरस्कार पूर्ण हंसी हंसा। बालखिल्य बहुत दुखी हुए, और उन्होंने दूसरे इन्द्र के लिए तपस्या आरम्भ कर दी। इन्द्र को अपने किए पर पछतावा लगा और वह कश्यप के पास आया। कश्यप के माध्यम से बालखिल्य शान्त हुए। एक अन्य कथा के अनुसार च्यवन को अश्विनी कुमारों ने दृष्टि दी तथा उसका यौवन लौटाया। इसलिए शर्याति ने अश्वनी कुमारों को हर्विभाग दिलाना चाहा। इसमें इन्द्र ने बहुत बाधाएं डाली। इन्द्र बज्र मारने लगता तो च्यवन उसके हाथ की हलचल बंद कर देता। ऋषि ने उसे मारने के लिए मद नामक असुर को उपस्थित किया। लाचार इन्द्र च्यवन ऋषि के आश्रम में आया। तब से अश्विनी कुमारों को हवि मिलना आरम्भ हुआ।
किसी  किसी इन्द्र का आचरण लांछनीय भी है। उतथ्य की गर्भवती पत्नी के साथ बलात्कार, गौतम पत्नी अहल्या से गौतम रूप में दुराचार आदि उदाहरण है। ऐसे आचरण के समय शापादि द्वार इन्द्र ऐश्वर्य भ्रष्ट भी हो जाता। 
पुराणों में इसका स्थान त्रिमूर्ति के बाद में है। यह अंतरिक्ष और पूर्व दिशा का राजा है। यह बिजली फेकता तथा इन्द्रधनुष सज्जित करता है। सोमरस पीता है असुरों से सदा डरता रहता है। यह सुन्दर है, सफेद हाथी या अश्व पर सवारी करता है। इसका निवास स्थान स्वर्ग है तथा राजधानी अमरावती, रथ विमान, सारथि मातलि, राजवाडा वैजयत, बाग नंदन, गज ऐरावत, घोड़ा उच्चैश्रव, धनुष शक्रधनु, तलवार प्ररंज है। महाभारत के अनुसार राजनीति शास्त्र सम्बंधी ग्रन्थ ‘वैशालाक्ष को संक्षिप्त करके इन्द्र ने “बाहुदंतक” नामक पांच हजार अध्याय का संक्षिप्त ग्रन्थ निर्मित किया। वैद्यक शास्त्र में इन्द्र के नाम पर अनेक औषधियों के पाठ हैं। यह वायु का शिष्य है।
English Translation.
Indra
There is an Indra in each Manvantara. After performing thousands of yagyas, one gets the status of Indra. Its main function is to protect the subjects. There are two different Indras, in each Manvantara (cyclic period of time in Hindu cosmology) But their qualities and actions remain the same. The counselors of Indra are the Saptarishis. Gandharva and Apsaras increase its, opulence. When it is not able to manage the world smoothly, then all the gods help it. Indra’s designation, is achieved with great difficulty, so when there is even the slightest doubt of losing it, Indra creates obstacles in it. Like Vishwamitra, he sent Menaka not to do penance. By stealing the horses of the city Prithu and performed the Ashvamed Yagya, he caused disturbance to Indra’s wife Shachi or Indrani.  According to Rigveda, there is mutual relation between Indra and Angira Rishi. It’s weapons are thunderbolt, bow, spear, fan etc. Indra is the god of rain. It is also called Purandar Dev. It is said to have generated electricity. There are many stories associated with Indra, once Kashyap was performing Putrakameshti Yagya. Along with the deities, Indra and Balkhilya were also helping it. All the children together were taking them to a Samidh. They started swimming in a little water on the way. Seeing this, Indra laughed with, full of contempt. Balkhilya was very sad, and he started penance for another Indra. Indra regretted his actions and came to Kashyap. Balkhilya was pacified through Kashyapa. According to another legend, Ashwini Kumaras gave sight to Chyawan and returned his youth. That’s why Sharyati wanted to give Harvibhag to Ashwani Kumar. Indra put many obstacles in this. When Indra used to strike thunderbolt, Chyavan would have stopped the movement of his hand. The sage presented an asura named Mada to kill him. Helpless Indra came to the hermitage of Chyavan Rishi. Since then Ashwini Kumars started getting Havi. The behavior of Indra is also condemnable. Rape of Utathya’s pregnant wife, misbehavior with Gautama’s wife Ahalya as Gautama are examples. At the time of such conduct, Indra Aishwarya would have been corrupted by the curse. It’s place in Puranas is after Trimurti. It is the king of space and east direction. It throws lightning and decorates the rainbow. He drinks Som-ras, he is always afraid of the Asuras. It is handsome, rides on a white elephant or horse. Its abode is heaven and the capital is Amravati, Rath Viman, Sarathi Matali, Rajwada Vaijat, Bagh Nandan, Gaj Airavat, Horse Uchchaishrav, Dhanush Shakradhanu, Talwar Praranj. According to the Mahabharata, Indra created a brief book of five thousand chapters called “Bahudantaka” by abbreviating Vaishalaksha, a treatise related to political science. In the medical science, there are lessons of many medicines in the name of Indra. He is a disciple of Vayu.
