ऋषि मरीचि स्वायंभुव मनवन्तर में ब्रह्मा के मानस पुत्र थे। वे इक्कीस प्रजापतियों में एक थे। दक्ष पुत्री संभूति इनकी पत्नी थी। संभूति की बहिन सती शिव को ब्याही गई थी। संभूति से मरीचि को पूर्णिमा पुत्र तथा कृष्टि, वृष्टि, त्विषा और उपाचिति चार पुत्रियाँ हुई। भागवत पुराण के अनुसार उनकी दो पत्नियाँ कला और उर्णा थी। कला से उन्हें दो पुत्र कश्यप और पूर्णिमा और एक बेटी सुरुपा हुई। सुरूपा अंगिरा ऋषि के साथ ब्याही गई थी।
मरीचि धर्मशास्त्रकार हुए हैं। उनके मत मिताक्षरा, अपरार्क, स्मृति-चन्द्रिका आदि ग्रंथों में मिलते हैं। इन ग्रंथों में आर्हिक, अशौच, श्राद्ध, प्रायश्चित और व्यवहार आदि विषयों पर उनके मत उद्धृत किए गए हैं। व्यवहार शास्त्र में मरीचि का कथन है, अचल सम्पति बेचने, खरीदने, दान देने और बंटवारा करने का कार्य मौखिक नहीं, लिखित होना चाहिए। तभी वह नियम मरीचि के अनुसार मानसिक व्याधियाँ चार प्रकार है-भोग्य, गोप्य, प्रत्यक्ष और अज्ञात
भगवद गीता के अनुसार मरीचि वायु देवता है ।
मारीचि का उल्लेख कई सनातन धर्म ग्रंथों जैसे ब्रह्माण्ड पुराण और वेदों में किया गया है। इन्होंने वेदान्त की रचना की। उन्हें महावीर का अवतार माना जाता है। उन्होंने पुष्कर में ब्रह्मा की तपस्या की और उन्हें महर्षि की पदवी से नवाजा गया। मरीचि भीष्म के पास गए, जब वे बाणों की शय्या पर लेटे थे। वह एक सलाहकार महाराजा ध्रुव थे।

English Translation.

Rishi Marichi was the Manas son of Brahma in Swayambhuva Manvantar. He was one of the twenty one Prajapatis. Daksha’s daughter Sambhuti was his wife. Sambhuti’s sister Sati was married to Shiva. From Sambhuti Marichi had a son Purnima and four daughters Kristi, Vrishti, Tvisha and Upachiti. According to the Bhagavata Purana, his two wives were Kala and Urna. Kala gave birth to two sons Kashyapa and Purnima and a daughter Surupa. Surupa was married to Angira Rishi.
Marichi has become a theologian. His views are found in Mitakshara, Aparark, Smriti-Chandrika etc. In these texts, his views on subjects like Aarhika, Ashaucha, Shraddha, Atonement and Behavior etc. have been quoted. Marichi’s statement in Vyavar Shastra, on the act of selling, buying, donating and distributing immovable property, is that such processes should be written, and should not be verbal. That’s why according to this Marichi rule, there are four types of mental processes -Bhogya, Gupta, Pratyaksh and an unknown process.
According to the Bhagavad Gita, Marichi is the wind god.
Marichi is mentioned in several sanatna dharma scriptures such as the Brahmanda Purana and the Vedas. He composed Vedanta. He is considered as reincarnation of Mahavira. He did tapasya of Brahma at Pushkar and was blessed with the designation of Maharishi. Marichi visited Bhishma, when he was lying on the arrow bed. He was an advisor Maharaja Dhruva.
