Rishi Ugrashravas

ऋषि उग्रश्रवस व्यास की पुराण और महाभारत परम्परा का प्रमुख आचार्य था। इसलिए पौराणिक साहित्य में इसे जगद् गुरु तथा महामुनि उपाधियों से विभूषित किया गया है। वह भागवत पुराण, हरिवंश और पद्म पुराण सहित कई पुराणों के कथाकार भी थे ! वह रोमहर्षन के पुत्र थे, और महाभारत के लेखक व्यास के शिष्य थे। उग्रश्रवा पौराणिक साहित्य के चारण थे।
‘महाभारत के प्रथम प्रवक्ता कृष्ण द्वैपायन व्यास थे। उन्होंने ‘जय’ ग्रन्थ की रचना की और अपने शिष्य वैशंपायन को यह ग्रन्थ सौंपा। वैशंपायन ने ‘जय’ को परिवर्द्धित करके राजा जनमेजय को “भारत” ग्रन्थ की कथा सुनाई। उग्रश्रवस ने “भारत” ग्रन्थ में अनेक आख्यान और जोड़ दिए। इस ग्रन्थ में श्री कृष्ण और अन्य यदुवंशियों का उल्लेख नही था। इस कमी को पूरा करने का श्रेय उग्रश्रवस को जाता है। उसने हरिवंश की रचना करके इसे “महाभारत” का परिशिष्ट पर्व नाम पुराण दिया ।
उग्रश्रवस ने कुरुक्षेत्र के पंचक क्षेत्र (नैमिष अरण्य) के निवासी शौनक आदि ऋषि मुनियों को ऐतिहासिक अर्थात महाभारत की कथा कहने का कार्य सौंपा। इसलिए इस ऋषि का नाम व्यास और वैशंपायन जैसा ही प्रतिष्ठित है।
महाभारत महाकाव्य में उग्रश्रवा एक कथावाचक थे और ऋषि शौनक एक श्रोता थे ! इस महाकाव्य को, इन दोनो के बीच एक संवाद के रूप में प्रस्तुत किया गया है। ऋषि वैशम्पायन द्वारा कुरु राजा जनमेजय को भरत राजाओं के इतिहास का वर्णन उग्रश्रवा सौति के इस कथन के भीतर सम्मिलित है। वैशम्पायन के कथन, जया, में संजय द्वारा कुरु राजा धृतराष्ट्र को कुरुक्षेत्र युद्ध का वर्णन भी शामिल है।
इस प्रकार महाभारत की कहानी, एक संरचना के भीतर एक कहानी के रूप में है।
आधुनिक इतिहासकारों के अनुसार उग्रश्रवस द्वारा रचित महाभारत ग्रन्थ लगभग 4 हजार वर्ष पुराना है।
ईसा से दो सौ वर्ष पूर्व पातंजलि के महाभाष्य में महाभारत कथा का उल्लेख अनेक बार हुआ है।

English Translation.
Sage Ugrashravas was the chief acharya of Vyasa’s Purana and Mahabharata tradition. That’s why in Sanskrit literature, he has been decorated with the titles of Jagad Guru and Mahamuni. He was also the narrator of many Puranas including Bhagavata Purana, Harivamsa and Padma Purana. He was the son of Roma-harshan, and was a disciple of Vyasa, the author of the Mahabharata. Ugrashrava was the patron of Mahabharat literature. Krishna Dwaipayana Vyas was the first exponent of the Mahabharata. He composed the book ‘Jaya’ and handed over this book to his disciple Vaishampayan. Vaishampayan narrated the story of “Bharat” book to King Janamejaya by modifying ‘Jaya’. Ugrasravas added many more narratives to the book “Bharat”.
There is no mention of Shri Krishna and other Yaduvanshis in this book. The credit for bridging this gap goes to Ugrasravas. He composed the Harivamsa and named it Purana, an addendum to the “Mahabharata”. Ugrasravas was assigned the task of narrating the story of historical importance i.e. Mahabharata, to the sages like Shaunak, residents of Panchak area (Naimish Aranya) of Kurukshetra. That’s why the name of this sage is as prestigious as that of Rishi Vyasa and Vaishampayana.
In the Mahabharata epic, Ugrashrava was a narrator and Rishi Shaunak was a listener. This epic is presented in the form of a dialogue between these two sages. The description of the history of the Bharata kings by sage Vaishampayana to the Kuru king Janamejaya is included within this statement of Ugrashrava Sauti. Vaishampayana’s narrative, Jaya, also includes Sanjaya’s description of the Kurukshetra War to the Kuru king Dhritarashtra. The story of the Mahabharata, thus, is in the form of a story within a structure. According to modern historians, the Mahabharata written by Ugrasravas is about 4000 years old. The Mahabharata story has been mentioned many times in Patanjali’s Mahabhashya two hundred years before Christ.
