ऋषि शमीक
शमीक ऋषि अंगिरा कुल में उत्पन्न हुए थे। उन की पत्नी का नाम गौ और पुत्र श्रृंगी था। शमीक ऋषि महान तपस्वी तथा परोपकारी स्वभाव के थे । कौशिक नदी के तटपर एक अतीव सुन्दर एवं प्राकृतिक स्थान पर ऋषि शमीक का आश्रम था ।
अनेक ऋषिकुमार उनके पास वेदों का अध्ययन करने के लिए रहते थे । शमीक ऋषि का पुत्र शृंगी भी उन ऋषिकुमारों के साथ रहकर अध्ययन कर रहा था । यह ऋषि प्रायः मौन धारण किए करते  और गायों के स्थान पर रहते। बछड़ों द्वारा दूध पी लेने के पश्चात् जो फेन निकलता, उसे पी कर  वह तपस्या  करते थे । एक बार राजा परीक्षित आश्रम में पहुंचे।  उस समय ऋषि शमीक आश्रम में तपस्या में लीन बैठे थे, तथा समाधी अवस्था में थे। राजा ने इसे अपना अपमान समझा।
उस समय उस राज्य के राजा  वन में भटकते रहे थे , तथा भटकते भटकते बहुत थक गए थे एवं प्यास से व्याकुल हो गए थे, उन्हें विश्राम करने की अत्यंत आवश्यकता थी ।   राजा परीक्षित ऋषि शमीक के पास गये  और सोचा की इस स्थान पर उन्हे पानी मिल सकता है तथा थोड़ा विश्राम भी मिल सकता है लेकिन ऋषि मौन रहे। परीक्षित ने एक मृत सांप ऋषि के गले में डाल दिया। ऋषि के शिष्य कृश ने इस घटना को  ऋषिपुत्र  शृंगी को बताया। श्रृंगी ने क्रोधित होकर कहा, “सात दिन के भीतर परीक्षित तक्षक नाग द्वारा डसने से मर जाएगा। जब ऋषि शमीक को पता लगा। उसने बेटे को इस कुकृत्य के लिए धिक्कारा। उसने अपने शिष्य गौरमुख को परीक्षित के पास भेजा कि वह तक्षक नाग से सावधान रहे। परन्तु ऋषि का सन्देश पहुचने से पूर्व ही परीक्षित की मृत्यु हो चुकी थी। ऋषि शमीक ने गरुड़ वंश के पंक्षियों की रक्षा करने का बीड़ा उठाया। महाभारत के युद्ध के समय गरूड़ वंशीय पिंगाक्ष, विवोध, सुपुत्र, सुमुख नामक पंक्षी, सुप्रतीक नामक हाथी के घण्टे के नीचे छिपकर बच गए। ऋषि उन्हें अपने आश्रम में ले आए और उनका पालन पोषण किया।
English Translation
Rishi Shamik
Shamik Rishi was born in Angira clan. His wife’s name was Gau and son was Shringi. Shamik Rishi was of a great ascetic and philanthropic nature. There was an ashram of Rishi Shamik at a very beautiful and natural place on the banks of river Kaushik.
Many sages lived near him to study the Vedas. Shringi, the son of Rishi Shamik, was also studying with those sages. This sage used to keep silent and used to live in the place of cows. He used to do penance by drinking the froth that came out after the calves drank milk. Once King Parikshit reached the ashram. At that time, Rishi Shamik was sitting in the ashram engaged in penance, and was in a state of samadhi. The king considered it as an insult.
At that time, the King was very tired and distraught with thirst, he was in great need of rest. King Parikshit went to sage Shamik and thought that at this place he could get water and also get some rest but the sage remained silent. Parikshit put a dead snake around the sage’s neck. The sage’s disciple Krish narrated this incident to the sage’s son Shringi. Shringi became angry and said, “Within seven days, Parikshit will die of Takshak’s snake bite.”
On hearing this the rishi, got annoyed with his son. He sent a message to the king to be careful. But Parikshit had died before the sage’s message could reach him. Sage Shamik took it upon himself to protect the birds of the Garuda clan. During Mahabharata war, Garuda clan bird, namely Pingaksh,
survived by hiding under the hood of an elephant named suprteek. The rishi brought him to his hermitage and looked after him.
