Rishi Tapodat (Yavakrit)
A sage named Raibhy, used to live on the banks of river Ganga. Near his ashram was the ashram of Maharishi Bhardwaj. Both had a close friendship. They used to care each other and think about each other’s happiness and sorrow. Raibhy Muni had two sons – Arvavasu and Paravasu. Both the brothers were intelligent and well versed in all the sciences. One day, Paravasu’s wife Suprabha was going to bathe in the nearby river. She was extraordinarily beautyful. Yavkrit’s evil eye fell on him.
Maharishi Raibhy killed Yavakrit because of his evil act. When his grieving father, Bharadvaja, was about to take a fire-burial when Arvavasu, the son of Raibhy brought him back to life. Yavakrit was unable to compose Ved mantras like his father Bharadvaja. Yavkrit was not interested in getting education and used to stay away from Gurukul. Being illiterate, he was not respected in the society. It was extremely difficult for him to continue his studies with the younger children in the Gurukul as he had got older. That’s why he thought of doing tapasya of Lord Indra and wanted to get all the knowledge by asking for a boon. He started doing tapasya to get knowledge. He did penance on the banks of the Ganges to please the Lord. Lord Indra understood his mind. Indra explained to him that knowledge is not gained by penance, but by study. But ignoring him, he lit a fire and started doing severe penance. One day an old man sat beside him, started pouring handfuls of sand into the Bhagirathi. Yavkrit asked him what he was doing. He told that he is building a bridge over the river. Laughing at his stupidity, Yavkrit said that such a bridge can not be built over the river. He is wasting his labor in vain. The old man said, “Even knowledge is not attained in this way i.e tapasya. You are also wasting your time.”
The sage advised him that, ‘There is no limit to attaining knowledge. If he makes up his mind, he can still become a great scholar like his father.’
Yavkrit recognized Indra and apologized. Indra gave a boon to Yavakrit that he would be the best sage and shall compose the Vedas. Yavkrit later became a great scholar and became famous as a great sage, namely Rishi Tapodat.
