ऋषि कण्व
कण्व वैदिक काल के ऋषि थे। इनके पिता का नाम घोर ऋषी था ।
कण्व एक से अधिक हुए हैं, एक अंगिरस तथा दूसरा काश्यप। कण्व का अर्थ सुखमय होता है।
1. कण्व अंगिरस इसका कुल पुरुओं से उत्पन्न हुआ है। विष्णु पुराण में इसे मतिनार का पोता और अप्रतिरथ का पुत्र कहा है। कई स्थानों पर इसे अजमीढ़ का पुत्र कहा है। इस ऋषि का ऋग्वेद में बार-2 उल्लेख आता है। उसके अनुसार यह याज्ञवल्क्य के पन्द्रह शिष्यों में से एक था। बाद में इसने यजुर्वेद में कण्व शाखा स्थापित कर उसके ग्रन्थ निर्माण किए। वे ग्रन्थ कई बातों में याज्ञवल्क्य के विरूद्ध हैं। कण्व गोत्र गोत्रियों को दक्षिणा नहीं देनी चाहिए। कण्व धर्म शास्त्रकार हुए हैं। आपस्तव ने अपने ग्रन्थ में एक प्रश्न उठाया है किसका अन्न ग्राहय है।’ इसका समाधान उसने कण्व के ग्रन्थ से लिया है। “किसी से भी आदर से दिया हुआ अन्न ग्राह्य है।” इस ऋषि के निम्न ग्रन्थ हैं ।
कण्व नीति कण्व संहिता कण्व-उपनिषद्, कण्व स्मृति आदि इन्हो ने ऋषी पंचमी व्रत की रचना भी  की थी । कण्व के वंशज काण्वायन ब्राह्मण कहलाए। इसी वंश में ऋषि मुद्गल हुए, जिनके वंशज मौद्गल कहलाए। ऋषि कण्व की गणना सप्तऋषियों में होती है। इन्हीं के आश्रम में हस्तिनापुर के राजा दुष्यंत की पत्नी शकुंतला एवं उनके पुत्र भरत का लालन पालन हुआ था। ऋषि कण्व ने अप्सरा मेनका के गर्भ से उत्पन्न विश्वामित्र की कन्या शकुंतला को पाला था । शकुंतला अप्सरा मेनका और विश्वामित्र की पुत्री तथा राजा दुष्यंत की पत्नी थी। महर्षि कण्व अष्टम मण्डल के द्रष्टा ऋषि भी कहे गए हैं।
English Translation
Rishi Kanva
Kanva was a sage of the Vedic period. His father’s name was Ghor Rishi.
There are many kanvas, Some are Angiras and the other Kashyaps. Kanva means auspicious.
1. Kanva Angiras originated from its clan of Purus. In the Vishnu Purana, Kanva is said to be the grandson of Matinara and the son of Apratiratha. In many places he is called the son of Ajmeed. This sage is mentioned twice in Rigveda. According to him, he was one of the fifteen disciples of Yajnavalkya. Later, he established Kanva branch in Yajurveda and composed his books. Those texts are against Yajnavalkya in many respects. It is mentioned that Dakshina should not be given to Kanva gotras. Kanva had become a religious scholar. Apastava has raised a question in his book, whose food should be acceptable. He has taken the answer of this question from the book of Kanva. “Food given with respect from anyone is acceptable.” This sage has written following books:-
Kanva policy, Kanva Samhita, Kanva-Upanishad, Kanva Smriti etc. He also composed Rishi Panchami Vrat. The descendants of Kanva were called Kanvayan Brahmins. Rishi Mudgal was born in this dynasty, whose descendants were called Maudgal. Rishi Kanva is counted among the seven sages. Shakuntala, wife of King Dushyant of Hastinapur and his son Bharat were brought up in Kanva’s ashram. Sage Kanva brought up Vishwamitra’s daughter Shakuntala born from the womb of Apsara Menaka. Shakuntala was the daughter of Apsara Menaka and Vishwamitra and was the wife of King Dushyant. Maharishi Kanva has also been called the seer sage of the eighth division.
