ऋषि कामद
कामद ब्रह्म ऋषि थे। राजा अंगरिष्ट ने इनसे पूछा, “शुद्ध धर्म, अर्थ और काम क्या है। ऋषि ने उत्तर दिया, जिससे चित की शुद्धि हो वह धर्म, जिससे पुरूषार्थ साध्य हो वह अर्थ तथा केवल देह निर्वाह की इच्छा हो वह काम है।
सनातन धर्म की मान्यताओं के अनुसार कामद ऋषि ने ब्रह्मा जी की छाया से जन्म लिया था। उनके जीवन का उद्देश्य सृष्टि की रचना और जनसंख्या वृद्धि था।
कामद ने एक बार भगवान विष्णु को अपनी तपस्या से प्रसन्न कर अपने लिए योग्य कन्या मांगी थी। विष्णु ने कहा कि उन्होंने इसकी व्यवस्था पहले ही कर ली है। भगवान विष्णु ने ऋषि कामद से कहा, “स्वयंभुव मनु तुम्हारी कुटिया पर पहुँचेंगे और तुम्हारे सामने अपनी पुत्री देवहूति को प्रस्तावित करेंगे, जिसे तुम स्वीकार कर सकते हो।” विष्णु ने बताया कि वह स्वयं उनकी पत्नी के गर्भ से जन्म लेंगे।
ब्रह्मा जी की आज्ञा का पालन करने के लिए ऋषि ने मनु की दूसरी पुत्री देवहूति से विवाह किया। मनु एक बार अपनी बेटी के साथ कर्दम की कुटिया में आए और विवाह का प्रस्ताव रखा। कर्दम ने खुशी-खुशी देवहूति से शादी कर ली। नारद के मुख से कामद की प्रशंसा सुनकर देवहूति कामद से विवाह करने के लिए आतुर हो उठी। कामद ने योग में स्थित होकर एक सर्वव्यापी विमान बनाया। कामद ने देवहूति को सरस्वती नदी में स्नान करने और विमान में प्रवेश करने को कहा। उसकी सहायता से स्नान करने के बाद वह कामद के साथ विमान में चढ़ गई। दोनों ने हवाई जहाज से बहुत यात्रा की। कामद और देवहुति ने नौ कन्याओं को जन्म दिया। कामद ने देवहुति को बताया कि पूर्व वरदान के फलस्वरूप निकट भविष्य में विष्णु उसके गर्भ में जन्म लेंगे, ब्रह्मा की प्रेरणा से उन्होंने अपनी सभी पुत्रियों का विवाह प्रजापतियों से करवा दिया।
देवहूति ने नौ पुत्रियों और एक पुत्र को जन्म दिया। लड़कियों के नाम थे कला, अनुसुइया, श्रद्धा, हविर्भू, गति, क्रिया, ख्याति, अरुंधति और शांति तथा पुत्र का नाम कपिल था। उनकी नौ पुत्रियों का विवाह क्रमशः प्रजापति, मरीचि, अत्रि, अंगिरा, पुलस्त्य, पुलह, रितु, भृगु, वसिष्ठ और अथर्व से हुआ था। देवहुति ने ‘कपिल’ को जन्म दिया, जो विष्णु के अवतार थे। कपिल अपनी माता देवहूति के पास रहे और देवहूति ने उन्हें भक्ति-त्याग आदि के मार्ग पर अग्रसर किया।
वास्तव में भगवान विष्णु ने स्वयं कपिल के रूप में देवहूति के गर्भ से अवतार लिया था।
English Translation.
Rishi Kamad.
Kamad was a brahmrishi. King Angrishta had once asked him, “What is pure Dharma, Artha and Kama.”
Rishi Kamad replied, “Dharma is that which purifies the mind, Artha is the purusharth, and Kama is the bodily desire i.e lust.
According to sanatna dharma beliefs, Kamad Rishi took birth from the shadow of Brahma Jee. The purpose of his life, was for the creation of universe and for increase of population.
Kamad had once pleased Lord Vishnu with his penance and asked for a suitable girl for himself. Vishnu said that he has already arranged for this. Lord Vishnu said to Rishi Kamad, “Swayambhuva Manu will reach your hut and propose his daughter Devahuti in front of you, which you may accept.” Vishnu told that he himself would take birth from the womb of his wife.
To obey Brahma jee’s order, the Rishi married Devhuti, the second daughter of Manu. Manu came to Kardam’s cottage, with his daughter once and proposed marriage. Kardam happily married Devhuti. Devhuti was eager to marry Kamad after hearing the praise of Kamad from the mouth of Narada. Kamad created an omnipresent aircraft by being situated in yoga. Kamad asked Devahuti to bathe in the river Saraswati and enter the plane. After taking bath with his help, she boarded the plane with Kamad. Both of them traveled a lot by plane. Kamad and Devahuti gave birth to nine daughters. Kamad told Devahuti that as a result of a previous boon, Vishnu would be born in her womb in the near future, under the inspiration of Brahma, he got all his daughters married to Prajapatis.
Devhuti gave birth to nine daughters and a son. The names of the girls were Kala, Anusuiya, Shraddha, Havirbhu, Gati, Kriya, Khyati, Arundhati and Shanti and the son’s name was Kapil. His nine daughters were married to the Prajapatis, Marichi, Atri, Angira, Pulastya, Pulah, Ritu, Bhrigu, Vasistha and Atharva respectively. Devahuti gave birth to ‘Kapil’, who was an incarnation of Vishnu. Kapil stayed with his mother Devhuti and Devhuti guided him on the path of devotion-renunciation etc.
In fact, Lord Vishnu himself incarnated from the womb of Devahuti in the form of Kapil.
